Viking Construction was the general contractor on the Fairgate mixed-income housing project in Stamford, Conn., overseeing the construction of 16 separate buildings that housed 90 different 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom townhouse and apartment units. The Georgian Colonial-style complex includes a community center with a childcare facility, administration and safety management offices, a video safety system, and impressive landscaping. It was built on a 1930s-era public housing site. The construction phase began before demolition was complete – so workers had to navigate around demolition crews while digging dozens of trenches for utilities, catch basins and foundation slabs. In spite of these challenges, Viking delivered the completed project on time and on budget. The new housing project caught the attention of Shaun Donovan, secretary of the federal Department of Housing and Development, who cited Fairgate as a model of the future for how diverse, sustainable public housing should be built.
